Vlad watched the exiled Hellsing as he considered his words, it was an excellent distraction from the thought of a sunlight execution. Or a sunlit suicide…

Calliope smiled at him with tears in her eyes, hand clasped in his in a final squeeze before letting him go. She backed up into the light, one foot after the other as steady as a winter pool.

She stayed silent, not a single scream passing her lips as smoke curled around her.

The smell of burning flesh in his nose-

Vlad mentally shook himself, stuffing the memory back into the box of trauma where it belonged. He had spent years crippled by that memory, he refused to let himself slip back into the pit of despair that had nearly consumed him.

He had a Hellsing to protect and a family of them to reacquaint himself with. His spy network was in shambles and someone had twisted the hunter’s disownment ritual into something cruel and dark, a punishment rather than a freedom.

“Someone you love died in sunlight,” Kain said.

It wasn’t a question, Kain was a smart man and had put two and two together without an ounce of effort. Vlad still bowed his head in a nod of acknowledgement and carefully set the scroll he’d been pouring over aside.

He was going through every single document that mentioned the disownment ritual, in hopes to find the time frame when the magic had been altered, if not precisely when. If he knew which Family Head had done it it would certainly narrow down where he’d have to go looking for answers.

‘Love’, present tense. That might have been the only reason that Vlad answered the question. It wasn’t often that people used the present tense rather than the past, Calliope was deader than iron after all.

“Yes,” Vlad said.

“Don’t,” Kain ordered, voice suddenly loud in the enclosed space of the office.

Vlad turned to blink at him. The hunter flushed at the eyebrow that was slowly climbing to meet Vlad’s hairline.

“Don’t tell me about it, not yet,” Kain clarified. “You looked like you were ripping your own guts out when you confirmed it.”

Vlad tilted his head to the side, running his eyes up and down the hunter that was sitting in his office as calm as you please. He wasn’t scared, which was a feat in and of itself, he’d been terrified a few days earlier on the plane and even the day before yesterday when Vlad had come to him as a child younger than he appeared now there had been a hint of wary nerves about him.

Not now though, now the Hellsing seemed perfectly calm, reading like he didn’t have a care in the world. The man was a guest, he didn’t need to worry about anything while he was under Vlad’s protection but Vlad hadn’t thought that he would realize it this soon.

Vlad opened his mouth to ask a question, to inquire as to why Kain was so content to just sit there and read. He should be trying to escape,
